Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about automatic electric driving lessons on the Wirral — from licence types and lesson costs to what it's actually like learning in an EV.
- 01Do I need special lessons to drive an electric car?
- No — electric cars are actually simpler to drive than conventional petrol cars. There are no gears to change and no clutch to manage. Most learners find the adjustment straightforward, and starting in an EV means you're building habits on a vehicle that represents how most cars are heading.
- 02What is an automatic licence, and can I drive a manual car later?
- When you pass your test in an automatic vehicle, your licence is restricted to automatic cars only, so you cannot legally drive a manual on it. If you later want to drive a manual, you'd need to take a separate manual test. For most people today this is a practical choice: EVs and modern automatics make up a growing share of the cars on the road, and many drivers never need a manual licence at all.
- 03Are automatic driving lessons easier than manual?
- Many learners progress faster in an automatic because there's no clutch or gear management to worry about. You focus entirely on observation, positioning, and decision-making — the skills that actually matter on the road. It doesn't make the test easier, but it removes a common source of stress and lets you build confidence more quickly.
- 04How many lessons will I need before my driving test?
- Everyone is different, but the DVSA average is around 45 hours of professional instruction alongside some private practice. Some learners are ready sooner, others take longer — there's no shortcut that replaces building genuine confidence. I'll give you an honest assessment as we progress rather than a fixed number upfront.
- 05Do I need to pass my Theory Test before starting practical lessons?
- No. You can start practical lessons straight away while you revise for your Theory Test, as long as you hold a valid UK provisional licence. Plenty of learners work on both at the same time. You will need to have passed your Theory Test before you can book your practical driving test, so it's worth getting it out of the way early.
- 06Can I take my driving test in an electric car?
- Yes. You can take the DVSA practical driving test in any roadworthy vehicle, including an electric car. The examiner assesses your driving ability — not the type of vehicle. Taking your test in the same car you've learned in means no surprises on test day.
- 07How much do automatic driving lessons cost on the Wirral?
- Pricing and packages are on the booking page. I offer individual sessions and block packages — block bookings give you a better rate and help keep momentum going between lessons. I'd rather you invest in the right number of hours than rush towards a test before you're genuinely ready.
- 08What areas of the Wirral do you cover?
- I teach across the Wirral Peninsula including Heswall, West Kirby, Birkenhead, Bebington, Neston, Wallasey, Hoylake, Bromborough, and Moreton. Each area has its own page on the site with more detail. If you're unsure whether I cover your area, just get in touch and I'll let you know.
- 09Which test centre do you cover on the Wirral?
- I prepare pupils for their test at Upton driving test centre, which covers much of the Wirral. As we get closer to test day we practise the routes, junctions and road types around Upton, so the roads feel familiar when it matters most.
- 10What's the difference between learning in an EV versus a petrol car?
- Electric cars are smoother and quieter, with instant acceleration and no gear changes. There's no stalling, no clutch bite point to find, and no engine noise to manage — this removes a layer of complexity from early lessons. You still cover everything the driving test requires; you just get to focus more on road craft from the start.
- 11What car will I be learning in?
- All lessons are in a Volkswagen ID.3, a fully automatic electric car. There's no clutch and no gears, just smooth, quiet acceleration and modern safety and visibility features that make it a calm, easy car to learn in. You can see the exact car, inside and out, on the car page. See the lesson car
- 12Can my driving instructor book my driving test for me?
- No — since 12 May 2026 it is a legal requirement that only the learner driver can book, change or cancel their own practical driving test. Instructors and third-party booking services can no longer do this on your behalf. You must book directly through the official DVSA service on gov.uk — the official fee is £62 on weekdays and £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. If you are being charged more than this, you are using an unofficial service. Book your driving test on GOV.UK
- 13How many times can I change my driving test booking?
- Since 31 March 2026, you can only change your test booking twice in total. A "change" covers moving the date or time, switching to a different test centre, or swapping your slot with another learner. From 9 June 2026, any change is also restricted to one of your three nearest test centres — you cannot move your test to a centre far from where you live. Plan your original booking carefully to avoid using up your changes unnecessarily.
- 14How do I book a driving lesson?
- Use the Book Now button at the top of the page. You'll fill in a short enquiry with your details and availability, and I'll be in touch to confirm. There's no automated system here — when you hear back, it's me directly.
